Carlyle said Kate Heinzelman will join the firm as general counsel on June 29, replacing Jeffrey Ferguson, who is moving to a senior adviser role after serving as the firm’s top lawyer since 1999.
Heinzelman most recently served as general counsel of the Central Intelligence Agency from July 2022 to January 2025, a span of roughly 2.5 years. Before that, she was chief counselor to the U.S. attorney general at the Department of Justice and held senior roles at Sidley Austin, the Department of Health & Human Services and the White House Counsel’s Office.
The appointment puts her in charge of Carlyle’s global legal and compliance organization and reporting directly to CEO Harvey Schwartz. Carlyle said Ferguson will continue to support the leadership transition and advise on strategic matters.
The change comes as Carlyle manages a large global platform: the firm said it had $475 billion in assets under management as of March 31, 2026, employed more than 2,500 people and operated from 28 offices across four continents. Today the company's shares have moved 0.46% to a price of $45.64. For the full picture, make sure to review Carlyle's 8-K report.
