Sarepta Therapeutics named Michael Severino chief executive officer effective July 28, replacing Doug Ingram, who is retiring after leading the company through what the board called a period of “meaningful growth and transformative milestones.”
Severino, who most recently was chief executive officer of Tessera Therapeutics and a CEO-partner at Flagship Pioneering since 2022, will also join Sarepta’s board. He previously served as vice chairman and president at AbbVie, where he oversaw research and development and corporate strategy, and earlier held senior roles at Amgen and Merck.
The leadership change comes after Ingram’s tenure delivered several key product milestones. The company said that under his leadership it secured approvals for two exon-skipping treatments and the first one-time gene therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Ingram will remain in an advisory role through the end of 2026.
Sarepta said Severino brings more than 25 years of biopharmaceutical experience and has helped contribute to more than a dozen approved therapies, including Rinvoq, Skyrizi and Venclexta. The company also highlighted his work building capabilities in genetics, genomics, computational biology and precision medicine at AbbVie.
The board said it chose Severino after a comprehensive search that identified multiple candidates. Sarepta did not disclose any financial terms tied to the appointment.
Ingram said he was leaving behind “a company with a great team, a portfolio of life-changing therapies, a pipeline with exceptional potential and the financial resources to advance that science independently and at scale.” Following these announcements, the company's shares moved -1.26%, and are now trading at a price of $15.68.
