MOHAWK INDUSTRIES INC Improves Sales and Profitability amid Weak Housing Activity

MOHAWK INDUSTRIES INC has recently released its 10-Q report. Mohawk Industries, Inc. designs, manufactures, sources, distributes and markets flooring products for residential and commercial remodeling and new construction in the United States, Europe, Latin America and other international markets. The company operates through three segments: Global Ceramic, Flooring North America and Flooring Rest of the World, and it also licenses intellectual property to flooring manufacturers.

Item 2 shows a business still under pressure from weak housing activity, but with quarterly sales and profitability improving on price, mix, volume and foreign exchange. Mohawk said commercial demand stayed stable in the second quarter of 2026, while U.S. and European housing markets remained soft, new home construction was sluggish and housing turnover stayed near historically low levels because of affordability constraints.

Mohawk said manufacturing operations span 19 countries and sales reach about 180 countries. It described itself as a supplier across every major flooring category, with long-lived assets concentrated in the United States and Europe, its primary markets. The company also operates in Australia, Brazil, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia and other regions.

The company said restructuring actions begun since 2022 are expected to generate about $360 million in annualized benefits. In the second quarter of 2026, it announced additional restructuring projects expected to cut costs by about $60 million once completed. Mohawk also plans about $460 million of capital expenditures in 2026, focused on capacity expansion and cost-reduction initiatives.

Tariff refunds were a major item in the quarter. Mohawk requested reimbursement of $70.7 million for IEEPA tariffs paid, and as of July 4, 2026, it had received $65.5 million. During the three and six months ended July 4, 2026, it reduced cost of sales by $49.3 million, reduced inventory by $12.8 million and reduced property, plant and equipment by $3.4 million tied to those tariff refunds.

For the quarter ended July 4, 2026, net sales rose 6.8% to $2.991 billion from $2.802 billion a year earlier. The increase came from about $78 million in higher volume, $67 million from price and product mix, and $61 million from foreign exchange, partly offset by about $13 million from fewer shipping days.

By segment, Global Ceramic sales increased 7.9% to $1.210 billion, Flooring North America sales rose 3.1% to $976.1 million, and Flooring Rest of the World sales climbed 9.7% to $805.6 million. Operating income for the quarter increased 34.4% to $253.7 million from $188.7 million, with gross profit up 11.3% to $795.1 million.

Net earnings attributable to Mohawk were $196.1 million for the quarter, up from $146.5 million a year earlier. The effective tax rate was 21.0%, compared with 18.8% in the prior-year quarter.

For the first six months of 2026, net sales increased 7.4% to $5.720 billion from $5.328 billion. Net earnings attributable to Mohawk rose to $313.2 million from $219.0 million, supported by productivity gains, improved price and mix, and more shipping days, while higher input costs tied to inflation remained a drag. Following these announcements, the company's shares moved 2.77%, and are now trading at a price of $122.875. If you want to know more, read the company's complete 10-Q report here.
