SunCoke Energy Adds Industry Veteran to Board

SunCoke Energy has added Wendell L. Carter to its board of directors, effective immediately, and named him to the compensation and governance committees. He will stand for election at the company’s annual meeting in May 2027.

Carter brings more than four decades in the iron and steel industry. He began at Inland Steel in 1983 and later held leadership roles across operations, engineering, strategy, product development, and quality.

Most recently, Carter served as executive vice president, technology, at Cleveland-Cliffs, where he oversaw research facilities in Middletown, Ohio, and Novi, Michigan, and managed 120 research engineers. He also oversaw corporate engineering, quality, and production planning, including an annual engineering and capital spending budget of about $1.0 billion.

From 2021 to 2022, he was executive vice president, west operations, at Cleveland-Cliffs, leading operations across Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, northern Ohio, and West Virginia. Before that, from 2010 to 2021, he was senior vice president, carbon light flat roll, at the company.

Carter also served from 2011 to 2020 as vice president and general manager of ArcelorMittal USA, where he was responsible for a 7.5-million-ton steelmaking facility, three supporting plants, and 4,900 employees.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering and an MBA, and has authored 13 technical papers on iron blast furnace construction and practice.
