Coursera Names Tom Savage as Chief Legal Officer

Coursera named Tom Savage as chief legal officer and secretary, effective Sept. 21, 2026, replacing Alan Cardenas in the top legal role as part of a planned transition.

Cardenas, who has been with the company for five years, will remain general counsel through the end of 2026 to help with the handoff. The company said he is stepping back to focus on his family after helping guide Coursera through its growth as a public company and its combination with Udemy.

Savage joins after nearly a decade at Red Hat, where he most recently served as vice president and general counsel for Red Hat at IBM from November 2017 to May 2026. Before that, he was general counsel at Marvell Technology and a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

Coursera said the combined Coursera and Udemy platforms now reach more than 300 million learners and 12,000 enterprise customers worldwide. As a result of these announcements, the company's shares have moved 2.1% on the market, and are now trading at a price of $5.146.
