Coursera Names Tom Savage Chief Legal Officer

Coursera named Tom Savage as chief legal officer and secretary, effective Sept. 21, while Alan Cardenas began a planned transition out of the head of legal role after five years with the company.

Cardenas will stay on as general counsel through the end of 2026 to help hand off responsibilities to Savage. Coursera said the move follows a period in which Cardenas oversaw the company’s growth as a public company and helped close its combination with Udemy.

Savage most recently served as vice president and general counsel for Red Hat at IBM, a role he held after nearly a decade at Red Hat from November 2017 to May 2026. Before that, he was general counsel at Marvell Technology and a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

Coursera did not provide financial terms tied to the leadership change. The announcement comes as the company says its combined Coursera and Udemy platforms now reach more than 300 million learners and 12,000 enterprise customers worldwide.
