Arbutus Biopharma Receives $178.4M Moderna Settlement, Plans $230M Capital Return

Arbutus Biopharma reported cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of $92.6 million at June 30, 2026, then added a major inflow in July when it received about $178.4 million as its share of Moderna-related settlement proceeds.

The company said that payment came from the $950 million noncontingent settlement payment Moderna made in July 2026 to Arbutus and Genevant. Arbutus also said it expects an additional $1.3 billion contingent payment if a specified appellate ruling goes its way.

Arbutus said it expects to return up to about $230 million in capital to shareholders.

On the litigation front, Arbutus and its partner Genevant entered into a settlement agreement on March 3, 2026 to resolve all global patent infringement litigation and patent revocation proceedings involving Moderna. The company said the July payment included reimbursement of litigation costs.

Arbutus also said it owns about 16% of Genevant’s outstanding common equity and expects a material dividend from Genevant in the third quarter of 2026.

In its LNP patent enforcement efforts, Arbutus filed three international lawsuits against Pfizer and BioNTech related to lipid nanoparticle technology.

On the clinical side, Arbutus said it achieved alignment with the FDA on a proposed Imdusiran Phase 2b trial design. Following these announcements, the company's shares moved -3.0%, and are now trading at a price of $4.53. If you want to know more, read the company's complete 8-K report here.
